Why Jiu-Jitsu? (Part 3: Growth through Failure) By Ted Chittenden 2/24/2022 www.madsciencejudoandjiujitsu.com Growth through failure Failure is just part of life, but it is critical for our growth and development both in Jiu-Jitsu and in our personal lives. The most important element of failure is that you first had to have tried. Just trying, especially something new, is a victory in and of itself. It is a demonstration of your courage and desire to grow. This should be something we celebrate, not used as a deterrent from trying again and trying other things. The second benefit of failing, is that we can learn something, ask the question – why did this ....
Read moreWhy Jiu-Jitsu? (Part 2: Beyond Fighting) By Ted Chittenden 2/8/2022 www.madsciencejudoandjiujitsu.com This part of “Why Jiu-Jitsu” will focus on benefits that Jiu-Jitsu can bring into your life that go beyond the ability to fight and defend yourself against other human beings. Typically, people come into my academy for either the ability to defend themselves or to get into better shape. Without question, our Jiu-Jitsu can provide the individual both of those things, but I really do not think that is what keeps people around year after year. It is all the other benefits that yield from Jiu-Jitsu that keep people coming back. In reality, I am in the business ....
Read moreWhy Jiu-Jitsu? (Part 1: Self-Defense Perspective) By Ted Chittenden 1/27/2022 I have practiced martial arts for most of my life. I have studied various types of martial arts over the decades, and one question I often receive is why Jiu-Jitsu? The short answer is because it works. However, the term “works” can be a bit more complex and it extends far beyond human combat. Part 1: Self-defense perspectives. From a combative/self-defense perspective, I am more inclined to favor arts that have more emphasis on grappling versus striking, especially regarding self-defense. Those that know me, might think this to be hypocritical on my part; questions ....

Read moreCurry, Sushi, Tamales, and Jujitsu (3:30 Read Time) Bear with me as I explore an intriguing connection between my culinary adventures and the jujitsu world. As a child, I stubbornly refused to eat Indian food, likely influenced by watching Indiana Jones devour questionable delicacies during his adventures in India. Subconsciously, I convinced myself that Indian cuisine was not to my liking. However, as I grew older, my palate became more adventurous. It wasn't until my late 20s or early 30s that I mustered the courage to try Indian food, and to my surprise, I discovered that I enjoyed it. A similar story unfolded with sushi. In my younger years, consuming raw fish repulsed me, ....

Read moreI could not be happier with the quality of the instruction and the comfort level walking in the door. Ted is an easy conversation and will defiantly keep things understandable regardless of the level you are on. Not only do I train, but my kids train with him as well. And, I have no reservations about recommending him to any adult or child wanting to learn.
BJJ is ton of fun and brings me back to wrestling around with my freinds and family. On top of that great atmosphere and instruction provided by coach ted.
I highly recommend trying mad science judo and Jiu-Jitsu. I am from out of town, but visit the area a couple times of year and have been looking for a go to gym to train at while in town. I showed up for a Friday open mat, and the training was great. Ted (the Black Belt Instructor) treated me like a valued member of his school, and by the end of the night I felt like I was a true member of the school. great people, great atmosphere, and great instruction. I highly recommend to anyone in the oak ridge/ Knoxville area to give this school a shot. I will definitely be back when I come back to town
